The PCA held their second International Invasive Weed Conference in the inspiring setting of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in London.

The conference was attended by a total of 122 delegates, who heard a wide range of speakers, all of whom were experts in their respective fields in the comfort of the Turing Lecture Theatre.

To start the conference, delegates were provided with an insight into the legal landscape and the issue of ‘risk’ around invasive species. A mortgage lender’s perspective was also shared with some interesting questions and discussion points raised.

The next session focussed on ‘roots’ and was on a practical theme. Surveying and mapping methods were explored, as well as the wide range of considerations that surveyors need to keep in mind. All aspects of the management of invasive weed remediation works was also explored, with plenty of tips for best practice. Finally, it wasn’t just about the terrestrial non-native species. Managing the challenges posed by aquatic non-native species was highlighted with a look at how they are managing the challenge in the Netherlands, and what can be learned from their experiences.

There is plenty of ongoing research and delegates heard from three speakers who really know their invasive species! In the final session, speakers shared insights into some exciting projects and made delegates aware of some key upcoming publications. Links to these will be available via the PCA website once they are published and members will be advised.

The day rounded off with a “Question Time” style panel debate. Panel members included the Environment Agency, Network Rail and Leicester City Council who are leading the way for local authorities in their processes and actions to manage the challenges of non-native invasive species.
