Conferences & Awards are back!

A fortnight ago we released the programme for this year’s Structural Waterproofing Conference and whilst some of you may have missed it, for us...this was a pretty big deal! The PCA conferences have always also been a bit of a flagship event for the industry where we can showcase best practice, share knowledge and expertise. To use a phrase from the last conference, it is a chance for us to be 'waterproofing geeks', which for the past two years, we have not been able to do this. When we held our last conference in 2019, the prospect and impact of a global pandemic would have been almost inconceivable - no one could have foreseen the following two years panning out the way they did! In 2020, we had to make the difficult decision to cancel the conference and in 2021 the idea of holding a conference was never really entertained.

What's in store this year?

So on the 14th July 2022 at The Slate, University of Warwick, in Coventry we are really looking forward to celebrating all things below ground waterproofing. What’s more, we believe we have a great programme to reflect this too...

Session 1 - Podium Decks

The day will kick off with a session focusing on Podium Decks. These tricky structures to waterproof have become increasingly popular as we look to maximise the space we have available to us. Ben Hickman will be setting the scene and looking at what Design Challenges do Podium Decks pose. Next up John Gilbert, LABC Warranty will be talking about the LABC Warranty Technical Document on Podium Decks and a warranty providers approach to what can be a problematic area of construction. The final speaker of the session will be looking at how technology can be used to help to ease remediation when water ingress does occur. These events are always seen as a great opportunity to network and given the lack of opportunities to do this over the past two years, this is something that we are very keen to encourage and a number of networking breaks will be provided over the course of the day. In addition, many of our manufacturer members will also be exhibiting to enable you to find out the latest products and innovations from them.

Session 2 - Water Management

The focus of the second session is around Water Management. Over the past 12 months there has been a notable increase in flooding events across the country, but notably in the capital with images of flooded basements becoming a common sight on the news. With the prospect of more extreme weather, we need to have a better understanding of the safety mechanisms we build into our systems and Ian Davies, Packaged Pump Systems, will be giving us an insight into what we can expect with the performance of a battery back up system. On the same theme Michael Vernon, Peak Waterproofing will discuss the ingress of surface water into underground structures and some of his personal experiences which will undoubtedly be a very interesting. The last speaker in this session will focus on External Land Drainage and the virtual role this plays in keeping water out of underground structures. This presentation will look at what challenges dictate the performance of such systems, and determining if they are possible on certain sites and what considerations should be given in their design.

Session 3 - BS8102 & Panel Debate

It would be fairly safe to say that the biggest news in the structural waterproofing world in 2022 is set to be the revision of BS 8102. To reflect this we are dedicating an entire session to the revision of the Standard. We will start with an overview of the changes to the document presented by yours truly. We will then be going into an extended Panel Debate session where we will welcome to the stage various members of the revision group to give their take on the document, where they have seen the most improvement and what they perceive the consequences to be. Prior to the pandemic, the conference has continued to grow year on year with almost 190 delegates in 2019 and we are hopeful this year’s event will continue that trend. We believe the programme has something for everyone with some extremely interesting topics and we look forward to seeing many of you there.
