Off to a Flying Start with our First Ever Webinar!
The PCA’s series of webinars for 2020 kicked off with its first one on ‘Avoiding Failures in Podium Deck Waterproofing’. Presented by Ben Hickman, CSSW.LONDON, the webinar saw over 190 people gaining an insight into mitigating failures in podium decks. For any of our members who were unable to join us, or who want to watch it again, the link will be shared next week. An Introduction to ‘Paula’s Papers’
Over the next few weeks, PCA’s Dr Paula Lopez-Arce will be releasing a set of short papers focussing on salts in porous construction and building materials. There is a distinct lack of well documented, applicable and published case studies dealing with problems of salts in non-historic buildings – these papers will aim to provide a better understanding of the problems which affect the durability of many types of buildings, materials and structures in all kind of climates and weather conditions.
**COMING SOON** The first ‘chapter’ in this series of papers will follow shortly and we will share each of them with members in your Friday email and across social media.

Evolution of Damp Control
Following his presentation on the Evolution of Damp Control at the PCA International Building Preservation Conference last November, Technical Manager James Berry has been asked to extend this into a peer reviewed article for the Journal of Building Survey, Appraisal & Valuation. Produced by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, this provides your Association with a great platform to share the story of how the industry has evolved – whilst dispelling a few myths too!
Not only is this a great accolade to have been asked to write for the journal, its peer-reviewed content is both intellectually rigorous and of direct relevance to the practice of building surveying, appraisal and valuation. The Journal’s overriding goal is to support the continuing professional development and education of those working in, or entering into the field.

Japanese knotweed Management – The Challenge
The Law Society have just released their new (4th edition) document TA6 “Property Information Form” in response to the Commons Select Committee report published last summer, to remove/reduce ambiguity relating to the presence or absence of Japanese knotweed.

Topics on the Agenda for SWG Meeting
The next Structural Waterproofing Group meeting takes place on 5th March. Topics on the agenda will include the update to BS 8102 and the Building Regs and how regulations to cladding on external walls may affect structural waterproofing.

Members are reminded that the Technical Document library hosts a number of valuable, useful and relevant codes of practice and best practice guidance documents – all available to you free of charge. These documents are a collaborative effort, created by your Association with input from members, so download them and use them – they are very much yours to use.

Convention Records Reaches International Heights
Receiving an email from the University of Attica (Athens) this week proved very interesting. It appears that Professor Anastasia Pournou is requesting to use some of the images for her book “Biodeterioration of Wooden Cultural Heritage in Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecosystems”, which will be published at a later date!
Our library of convention documents is available for all members to use, a great wealth of history, knowledge and information is contained here – and it’s incredible to discover how far afield our history and reputation is reaching! Evaluating Ventilation in Existing Buildings
Condensation and mould are the most common forms of dampness in buildings and it is becoming increasingly essential for anyone that inspects buildings, to understand the significant role that ventilation plays in controlling these issues and how to identify defects in ventilation systems.
The course provides delegates with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and understand ventilation systems 1—4 as defined in approved document F. The day will also cover PIV systems and probable defects that can occur within buildings.
