Using Video Diagnostics during ‘Lockdown’

Should we be using video consultancy and diagnostics? Your Association welcomes these innovations…but use them with caution!

This and other interesting innovations offer many opportunities for members during this period of lockdown, but how can surveyors ensure that their desire to help doesn’t come back and bite them?

Check out the advice Steve Hodgson has for members by clicking on the button below…

Risk Assessments in a Global Pandemic – A biologist’s perspective

Perhaps you are already weary of opinions about COVID-19 and the risks it poses to us all, at home and at work? Well we thought we’d ask your Invasive Weed Technical Manager Peter Fitzsimons, a biologist for 40 years, to give us his ‘take’ on the situation.

With Government advice effectively encouraging those in the construction sector to get back to work if they can do so safely, Peter asks the question ‘how do you actually assess the risk of a novel coronavirus which the Government’s own chief scientists don’t fully understand themselves?’.

Reference Material to Support ‘Paula’s Salts Papers’

Members will have seen the series of short papers which your resident researcher, Paula Lopez-Arce has released recently, focusing on ‘salts in porous construction and building materials’.

Paula has now provided a comprehensive list of reference documents to support the salts papers, which members can access via the button below, featuring a selection of article reviews, book chapters, reports and guidelines on salt crystallization in porous materials.

If you need any further information on topics relating to salts, or require the PDF of these individual documents, please get in touch with Paula on 01480 400000 or via email on [email protected].

Update on BS 8102

Despite the lockdown we can confirm with members that there is still progress on the review of BS 8102, which has been one of the primary objectives of your Association and the Structural Waterproofing Group for the last year.

We have been in contact with BSI regarding the next steps, following the deadline to comment on the proposal to review (3rd April), and we will look to share these comments with members, as soon as they are available.

If members wish to talk through any of this, please give James Berry a call on 01480 400000 or drop him an email at [email protected].

Ground Gas Protection Webinar

Are we making a ‘mountain out of a molehole‘ in terms of ground gas protection? Is it REALLY necessary and should we REALLY care?

PCA trainer Neil Salvidge walks us through a brief history of how we got to where we are now, why there is a need to develop standards and talks us through installation and verification methods.

Join us for the live webinar on Thursday 30th April 2020 from 9-10am to find out more…

Highways England Safety Alert

We draw members’ attention to a recent Safety Alert from Highways England regarding Underground Services Strikes.

Many of our invasive weed members work on highway projects and may have seen this already, but we thought it was a useful reminder to all of our members who are involved in ground works on construction sites, to be alert to the potentially fatal risks associated with underground services.

This Safety Alert includes links through to useful guidance issued during previous Highways England Safety campaigns (in 2015 & 2017).
