Are we seeing, ‘perhaps the end of the beginning?’
The Government has released probably three of the most important documents you’ll read this year to get the economy back up and running again. With figures published over the last couple of days indicating that over 70% of commercial construction sites are operational, your CEO Steve Hodgson asks, are we seeing, ‘perhaps, the end of the beginning?’.

Under the Radar: Buddleia & Bamboo Webinar
Our series of CPD webinars continues with ‘Under the Radar: Buddleia & Bamboo‘ on Thursday 21st May 2020, from 9-10am. Join us as Invasive Weed Group Member Jim Glaister gives us a practical overview of treatment methods available for controlling/eradicating bamboo and buddleia and guides us through the actual threat they cause to the built environment and raises the question…is Buddleia and Bamboo more structurally damaging than Japanese Knotweed and if so, why are we not more concerned?
Register for the live webinar and gain not only 1 BASiS point but 2 CPD points too!

Government Publishes Environmental Audit Committee Response
Earlier this week the Government published its response to the report of the Environmental Audit Committee on Invasive Species. The scope of the original inquiry covers all non-native invasive species including pathogens, so has taken on somewhat more significance since the Committee’s report was first published last September!
For our invasive weed members, it is great that the government is beginning to listen with what seems to be an overall positive response. Just for your info, the most relevant messages are:
- Defra acknowledged the need for more funding to tackle the impact of invasive species – estimated to be costing £1.8 billion a year!
- They will consider re-establishing Local Action Groups at the next review
- More controls on imports of plants to control fungal pathogens has already been enacted
- Confirmation of a further 6 Pathway Action Plans and a review of the list of ‘species of special concern’ (EU IAS Regulations) before 2nd August 2022

We had an another incredible audience on our webinar yesterday – 344 people joined the ‘Waterproofing & Insurance: Design with Confidence‘ webinar hosted by PCA Trainer Michael Earle. There were plenty of questions and lots of engagement as Michael guided listeners through how to create a waterproofing design that follows the recommended ‘best practice‘, relevant standards and the importance of insurance.

Can You Help – Old Time-Lapse Film
We have had a request from one of our members regarding a particular time-lapse film that we are hoping you might be able to help with.
Are any of our members aware of and knows of where we might be able to find a very old time-lapse film by Stanley Richardson on dry rot attacking a wet floor? The time-lapse demonstrates dry rot attacking a wet floor that then proceeds to grow up the inside face of the external wall where the source of moisture was coming from. It then continues to grow along the ceiling and develops a fruiting body above the dry floor area.
If anyone knows of the whereabouts of the film, it would be greatly appreciated if you could get in touch and share it.
Our thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
