What a Great Plant ID Course!
What a Great Plant ID Course!
Last week saw the VERY FIRST Invasive Plant Identification Course take place – and what a great day it was! We were pleased to welcome Laura Jones from AECOM to deliver the course to 11 enthusiastic candidates, who all got the chance to get “hands on” with over 20 different terrestrial invasive species!
No other identification course like this!
This exciting new opportunity was very well received by all, but don’t just take our word for it! Glen Parker of Phlorum commented:
“I thoroughly enjoyed the invasive weed identification course. It was great to see live specimens of the invasive species and be able to compare them side-by-side with similar native and non-native species. The course tutor was also very knowledgeable in plant identification, plant biology and ecology”.

From Identification to Legislation and Biosecurity
The day started with an introduction into the importance of correct identification and the implications if carried out incorrectly. As the morning progressed the course lead onto legislation in both the UK and across Europe, biosecurity and more.
How to identify the correct species
Laura talked through different techniques that can be used for identifying the correct species of a plant and then set the candidates loose to practices using them. With a wide range of plants such as American Skunk Cabbage, Rhododendron, Giant Hogweed and Variegated Yellow Archangel, to name a few, kept the candidates very busy and engaged!
Proud to offer this identification course
We are incredibly proud to be able to offer this exciting opportunity to our members, a course where there is nothing like this out there and more importantly, should enable candidates to be able to correctly identify plants on the Schedule 9 list!
We are offering this course again before the end of the year which takes place on 6th September 2019, so if you were unable to attend last week’s event make sure you don’t miss this date. Contact the training team on 01480 400006 to book your place.
