James’ Views on Ventilation & Dampness

The expectation of a specialist damp and timber surveyor is changing. Modern lifestyle, a typically less ‘hands on’ generation of millennials and the demands we expect of our existing housing stock are just a few of the drivers behind this evolution.

So what are we meant to do? Our very own Technical Manager James Berry expresses his view…

Amenity Forum Discusses New Standard

The Amenity Forum held their twice yearly Education Skills and Communications Group Meeting in York last Tuesday. One of the main features of the meeting was a detailed discussion around the launch and operation of the Forums Amenity Standard. Members of the Invasive Weed sector of the Association gave a mandate to the Executive to take them into the scheme, resulting in the PCA joining with BASIS as the first to offer access to and recognition through this new initiative.

At present there has only been a “soft launch” and there is much to do before the project goes live properly in the New Year. We will, as ever, keep members informed of the project as it begins to roll out and will pass on information about branding and promotion as this becomes available from the Forum.

Our Steve at the Upcoming UKCMB Conference

It seems to be ‘non-stop’ for our very own Steve Hodgson’s at the moment with all the speaker engagements he has been attending recently.

However, for those of you that may be attending the 2019 UKCMB Conference on the 5th November at the Bre in Watford, look our for our Steve chatting about ‘What is an acceptable level of building moisture and how is it defined?’

However, if you can’t make it, remember the PCA 2019 Building Preservation Conference is only a couple of weeks away!

Man Fined Thousands for Destroying Bat Roost

Most of us are fairly aware of the protection bats have within properties, but for those that are not, here is a reality wakeup!

A man who admitted destroying a roost for a protected species of bat has been ordered by a court to pay more than £7,000 and was charged with the ‘offence of damaging or destroying the breeding site or resting place of a European protected species of animal’.

“When the presence of a bat roost is suspected, there is a legal process that must be followed. Works can be licenced and mitigation measures put in place to protect the bats and their roost site to minimise the impact on their population.”

PCA Board Meeting

The Board meeting took place yesterday, Thursday 31st October, at the PCA Head Office in Huntingdon. The minutes from the meeting will be available shortly.

The next meeting is scheduled for 4th December.

Training – Get Set for Winter

Safe Use of Biocides

Get your technicians trained in the Safe Use of Biocides! This course has been a welcome initiative for the hundreds who have already attended – so the question is, what are you waiting for? Give your technicians the chance to join our Professional Users of Biocides Register too!
