PCA Submits Paper for Journal Ahead of Conference
We are delighted to share that the abstract we submitted for the 10th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality, Ventilation and Energy Conservation in Buildings “X IAQVEC” was successful. What is more, Dr Paula Lopez-Sarce has also submitted a paper for review to be published by Conference Proceedings: Material Science and Engineering, and will be indexed in various databases.
Over 50 buildings have been included in the KTP project and we’d like to take the opportunity to thank all of our members who have been a part of this ongoing research. Whilst 50 may seem a relatively low number, the level of detailed and valuable information which has been provided, has revealed new insights on the interpretation of pertinent environmental parameters related to excessive moisture and mould growth in UK dwellings.

PCA Presents at UCL Open Day Event
Last week UCL invited PCA’s Steve Hodgson to speak at their Open Day, celebrating 100 years of the Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources held at the new Here East campus. The Presentation delivered by Steve was less technical than some but it highlighted the value of collecting data in bulk, from real homes and utilising the skills and knowledge of PCA members.
Our work with UCL and the formal Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) continues until August this year and in order to take full advantage of the opportunities presented by this project, we have offered Paula (our academic associate) a position at the PCA beyond that date and, anticipate that our relationship with UCL and other academic partners to strengthen as we go forward.
Every day an interesting article is added to the Bartlett’s Centenary Celebrations webpage – certainly more informative than the current daily news – click on the button below to read more…

Residential Ventilation Group Meeting
Our next Residential Ventilation Group (RVG) Meeting will take place on 11th April 2019.
The RVG was set up to ensure the spotlight is placed on the issue of domestic ventilation in existing buildings, bringing greater awareness and focus to the subject of ventilation in residential properties and complementing the existing sectors of PCA membership. The Association believes that the frequency of problems associated with damp and mould resulting from indoor air are set to get much worse.
Topics on next weeks agenda include the recently introduced Homes Act and Amendments to Approved Document F. If you are attending, please contact James Berry and we’ll save you a seat: [email protected].

Step into Spring with some training
Evaluating Ventilation in Existing Buildings
**LAST CHANCE TO BOOK**
Condensation and mould are the most common forms of dampness in buildings and it is becoming increasingly essential for anyone that inspects buildings, to understand the significant role that ventilation plays in controlling these issues and how to identify defects in ventilation systems. Ideally delegates should have a building/trade background as well as some related skill, knowledge or experience.
Waterproofing Awareness
Ideal for delegates who need to understand how to identify the most common structural timbers found in house construction, using a variety of methods and to help them develop the necessary practical skills.
Expert Report Writing **MEMBERS ONLY**
This workshop is of benefit to anyone who has, or may need to in the future, act as an expert witness and prepare reports. Whatever a delegates level of experience, you will learn how to write high-quality expert reports and present evidence that will withstand the challenge of cross-examination in court – an excellent foundation for professionals seeking to develop their skills as expert witnesses.

LABC Shares Ideas for Amazing Basements
Intrigued by the burgeoning wealth of London’s property scene, Newcastle University’s Professor of Cities, Roger Burrows, undertook research into the city’s basement conversions. Raiding the planning portals of London’s wealthiest boroughs, including Hammersmith, Kensington and Chelsea, Wandsworth and Westminster, Dr Burrows compiled a list of so-called “mega-basements”. He found, among 4,650 basements created in those boroughs over the last decade.
