European Invasive Alien Species List updated
We bring you news of some additions to the EU Commissions list of ‘Species of Concern’. This is the first update since 2019 and includes 4 new plant species; Himalayan knotweed (Koenigia polystachya), Oriental bittersweet (Cetastrus orbiculatus), Water lettuce (Pistia stratioites), and Bushy needlewood (Hakea sericea). The first two listed here are already to some extent known to be invasives in the UK (HKW is listed under WANE in Northern Ireland) and may eventually be incorporated in to The Invasive Alien Species (Enforcement and Permitting) Order 2019. The GB non-native species 2022 Strategy document will be out soon and this will help to clarify the exact status of all the various pieces of IAS legislation (UK-EU-Post EU) and how they are enforced in each National region. We will keep you all up-to-date when this is published.
