The Perfect Storm for Mould Growth
We know that the number of people confined to their homes will greatly increase over the next few weeks and months as we get through another lockdown. However, whilst this has rapidly become the ‘new norm’ for 2020, your Technical Manager James Berry asks, ‘realistically, how suitable are our homes for these new arrangements? Is the next pandemic going to be a mouldy one…?!?’ Should PCA members be gearing up for a substantial increase in condensation and mould enquiries? To find out more, click on the button below.

Paula Presents the NEW BMI Tool!
Earlier this week, your Research Scientist Paula Lopez-Arce was invited to present at the UK Centre for Moisture in Building’s (UKCMB) “PROT3CT” event. As part of a project on “processes for sustainable retrofit of traditional dwellings in Turkey for climate-resilience, conservation and comfort”, Paula was able to share our newly launched Building Moisture Index (BMI) Diagnostic Tool.
The opportunity to present the Association’s new moisture diagnostic tool coincides with more of us working from home over the coming weeks and months. This will inevitably lead to home ventilation issues, excess moisture and mould growth. Our BMI tool really can help members to better determine and report on condensation and mould issues.
Interested in just how much the BMI tool can help YOU – simply get in touch with Paula on 01480 400000 / [email protected].
Presenting at Professional Conferences 2020
We welcome opportunities to represent you, our members, and next week sees your CEO Steve Hodgson presenting ‘Damp – Best Practice in Modern Diagnostics’ to an audience of 400 surveyors.
Part of Professional Conferences’ “Current Residential Property Issues 2020” virtual conference event, Steve will take attendees through a pragmatic and robust view of moisture detection and diagnostics carried out on site by building professionals.

Online Training: We need YOUR help!
Our online training will commence from January 2021 with our Surveying Timber & Dampness in Buildings course. Whilst we are delighted to be able to upgrade and improve our training to include an online offering, we cannot do this alone and therefore, we need YOUR help!
To ensure we have the most relevant and current material for this training, we require a selection of case studies. If possible, can any of our PCA members supply any case studies on dry rot and/or all types of damp projects, capturing the ‘before’ and ‘after’ progress?
In response to the challenges we have all faced, and continue to face, throughout 2020 we hope our members can assist us with gathering this content. Members can send this through to James Berry on [email protected] / 01480 400000.

Our next and last webinar for 2020 is now available for registration. This time, its all about “Controlling Ground Gases & Water – How to get Synergy”. Benefit from how you might be able to reduce your contractual liability and how you can better advise clients/tenants on combined ground gas and waterproofing issues.
Join us and Patrick Flood of Juta UK Thursday 26th November 2020 from 9-10am as he raises awareness and shares his advice on how we get synergy when trying to control both ground gases and water penetration.

No Training in November
The national lockdown has once again led to the cancellation of our training for November. We hope that dates for December remain unaffected and will confirm to members as soon as the Government confirms that restrictions have been lifted.
The team continues to work on our NEW ONLINE offering, which is scheduled for launch in 2021 with our Surveying Timber & Dampness in Buildings course. Get in touch with the training team today on 01480 400000 for more details.

Advice from HSE to Protect Home Workers
For our members who have any staff working at home, permanently or temporarily, it is important to remember you have the same health and safety responsibilities for home workers as for other members of staff.
Members can access Health & Safety Executive’s (HSE) advice for working at home, which has been updated to take account of working arrangements following Government guidelines. These documents and videos will help you address:
- How will you keep in touch with staff?
- What work activity will they be doing (and for how long)?
- Can it be done safely?
- Do you need to put control measures in place to protect them?
- Lone working without supervision
- Working with display screen equipment
- Stress and mental health

Test & Trace App – Have you Downloaded it?
The Government released guidance yesterday outlining how an individual’s personal data is collected and used when participating in the Test & Trace programme.
Test & Trace app users are also benefitting from updates to the app that make it more accurate and user-friendly. We know it is the fastest way of knowing when you’re at risk from coronavirus – the quicker you know, the quicker you can alert your loved ones and your community. Essentially, the more of us that use it, the better we can control coronavirus.
If any members have yet to download the app, you can do so by clicking on the button below.
